Mean Reversion & FadesFREE

VWAP Deviation

Finds coins that have moved more than 2 standard deviations away from their Volume-Weighted Average Price. These extremes often snap back, providing mean-reversion opportunities.

What is this scanner?

The VWAP Deviation scanner identifies coins that have moved more than 2 standard deviations away from their Volume-Weighted Average Price — a statistically extreme distance that historically shows mean-reversion tendencies. Think of it as finding coins that have been stretched like a rubber band: the further they are from fair value, the more force pulling them back.

The scanner distinguishes between 2-sigma and 3-sigma deviations, with 3-sigma events being rarer and higher probability reversal zones. It also tracks how long the price has been extended — brief spikes are less reliable than sustained extensions that have held for multiple candles.

Origin & History

Standard deviation bands around VWAP — often called 'VWAP bands' or 'anchored VWAP standard deviation bands' — were adapted from statistical process control methods. The concept that price beyond 2 standard deviations from an anchored average is statistically unusual traces back to Bollinger Bands (1980s) applied to VWAP as the center line.

In perpetual futures, VWAP deviations carry institutional weight because algorithmic market makers actively trade back toward VWAP. When retail buying or panic selling pushes price 3 standard deviations from VWAP, institutional algorithms are typically standing on the other side — which is why these levels often act as strong reversal zones.

Detection Criteria

VWAP Distance

Current price is more than 2 standard deviations (2-sigma) away from session VWAP. A 3-sigma deviation generates a higher-grade signal.

Extension Duration

Price has held beyond 2 standard deviations for at least 2 candles, indicating this is a sustained move rather than a momentary spike.

Reversal Candle

A candle showing rejection at the extreme level — long wick, doji, or engulfing — confirms the mean-reversion potential.

Volume Context

Volume during the extension is checked — buying into a 2-sigma deviation on volume surge (climax) is a stronger reversal signal than a quiet drift to the extreme.

Grading Breakdown

S

Price at 3+ sigma deviation with a reversal candle and volume climax. Classic mean reversion setup with institutional-level attraction back to VWAP.

A

Clear 2-sigma extension with a reversal candle. Price has held the extreme for 2+ candles, confirming the deviation is sustained.

B

2-sigma deviation reached but no reversal candle yet. Monitor for the trigger before entering.

C

Price approaching 2-sigma but hasn't reached it. Too early to call this an extreme — wait for the full deviation level.

Common Mistakes

Fading moves during strong trends. A breakout with volume can push price 3 sigma and keep going. Always check the regime and trend before fading a VWAP deviation.

Entering on the first touch of 2 sigma without a reversal candle. First touches often extend further before reversing — wait for the candle confirmation.

Using intraday VWAP for swing trade analysis. Session VWAP resets daily. For swing trades, use anchored VWAP from a significant pivot point rather than the day's VWAP.

Ignoring the direction of the deviation in context. A 2-sigma extension to the upside during a bull market is less likely to revert than a 2-sigma extension in the opposite direction of the primary trend.

How to Trade

Entry Context

Enter on the close of the reversal candle at the extreme. For longs at the 2-sigma low: a green close or hammer is the trigger. Avoid entering on the first touch without candle confirmation.

Risk Management

Stop beyond the 3-sigma level from VWAP. If price extends from 2 sigma to 3 sigma and beyond, the mean reversion thesis is failing — exit. Position size: 1-2% risk.

Target Framework

First target: VWAP (mean). Second target: 1-sigma on the opposite side. These are statistically robust targets. Take 50% off at VWAP, trail the remainder.
