VWAP Trend

Analyzes the slope of VWAP across multiple timeframes. When VWAP is rising on daily AND 4hr AND price is above both VWAPs, the trend is confirmed bullish (and vice versa).

What is this scanner?

The VWAP Trend scanner analyzes the slope and position of VWAP across three timeframes simultaneously — daily, 4h, and 1h. When all three VWAPs are rising and price is above all three, the trend has maximum institutional confirmation. When they all slope downward and price is below them, the trend is confirmed bearish.

VWAP is the benchmark that institutional order execution algorithms use — it's the fair price for the day that large funds target. When price consistently trades above VWAP across multiple timeframes, institutions are net long and trending. This scanner quantifies that consensus.

Origin & History

Volume-Weighted Average Price was developed in 1988 by James Elkins for institutional equity trading. It became the dominant benchmark for measuring execution quality — a fill above VWAP was poor for a buyer, below VWAP was poor for a seller.

Crypto traders adopted VWAP analysis around 2017-2018, using it on perpetual futures because of the 24/7 reset and the visibility of open interest alongside price. Multi-timeframe VWAP analysis — checking whether price is above the daily, 4h, and 1h VWAPs simultaneously — emerged as a high-accuracy trend filter for crypto because DEX liquidity is concentrated in trading sessions that anchor to VWAP levels.

Detection Criteria

Price Position

Current price must be above (bullish) or below (bearish) VWAP on all three analyzed timeframes. Even one VWAP violation reduces signal strength.

VWAP Slope

All three VWAPs must have a positive (bullish) or negative (bearish) slope. A flat VWAP on any timeframe suggests the trend is uncertain or ranging.

VWAP Spread

The separation between the three VWAPs — wider spread means stronger trend confirmation; narrowing spread means the trend is maturing or weakening.

Price Distance

How far price is from VWAP matters. Price more than 2 standard deviations above the daily VWAP suggests the trend is overstretched and mean reversion is possible.

Grading Breakdown

S

Price above all three VWAPs with all three rising, healthy separation between timeframe VWAPs, and volume confirming the trend. Maximum institutional alignment.

A

All three VWAPs sloping in the same direction with price correctly positioned, but spread is narrow (early trend) or price is extended (late trend).

B

Two of three VWAPs confirming the trend. The third is flat or transitioning. Valid but incomplete confirmation.

C

Price is correctly positioned relative to VWAPs but VWAP slopes are inconsistent across timeframes. Wait for more uniform confirmation.

Common Mistakes

Entering a VWAP trend trade when price is already 3+ standard deviations above the daily VWAP. Strong trends retrace to VWAP before continuing — chasing extended moves reduces risk/reward.

Not considering the daily VWAP reset. Intraday VWAP resets each day and early in the session has limited significance — weight the previous session's close relative to VWAP more heavily.

Treating a single VWAP cross as a trend reversal. Price crosses VWAP frequently during the day. Only sustained closes above/below VWAP matter for trend assessment.

Ignoring the VWAP slope. Price above a flat VWAP is less bullish than price above a rising VWAP — the slope provides trend confirmation beyond simple position.

How to Trade

Entry Context

Ideal VWAP trend entries come on pullbacks to the daily or 4h VWAP after a trend is established. These VWAP tests are institutional buying/selling opportunities. Do not enter when price is far extended from VWAP.

Risk Management

Stop below the lowest relevant VWAP (1h VWAP for intraday, 4h VWAP for swing trades). If price closes below VWAP, the trend hypothesis is weakened. Exit or reduce size. Position size: 1-2% risk.

Target Framework

Hold as long as price remains above all three VWAPs. The exit signal is when the 1h VWAP flattens and price falls below it. For swing trades, use 2x ATR from entry as minimum target before trailing.
